POSITION
SUMMARY:
Supports Gumberg Library’s patron-centered services in circulation, resource
sharing, course reserves, stacks maintenance, building access and usage. As the
supervisor-on-duty, the person in this position ensures that the safety and
security functions of Gumberg Library are in place and are being followed by
everyone using the library services and building spaces. In addition to leading
the evening projects and closing procedures, with the help of student employees
this person will routinely perform stacks management functions, compile reports
and data, assist patrons, and collaborate and cross-train with other Library
departments as necessary. At times, this
position will staff the third floor medical library when the rest of Gumberg is
closed
DUTIES
AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Creates a welcoming and safe environment for library patrons and staff through
active listening, leading by example, and referring questions accurately as
necessary.
Assists Gumberg Library patrons, in
person, over the phone, and through email.
Supports library-to-library lending
and borrowing by processing loan requests.
Employs attention to detail in
preparing items to ship through UPS system.
Opens/Closes the building following
the procedural checklist.
Be alert and mindful of the happenings
in the building.
Submits a supervisor report at the end
of each shift, communicating progress on projects, updates, or areas of concern
that the rest of the ASD team should know.
Responds appropriately to emergencies,
alarms, and building-related issues.
Writes and submits a succinct and
clear incident report describing issues with the condition of the building
and/or the need to contact Duquesne University Police Officers regarding
security incidents or emergencies.
Assists in the oversight of work
carried out by student assistants during their work shift, such as hourly
headcounts, staffing the front desk, and shelf reading.
Charges/discharges materials through
the integrated library system, FOLIO
Completes special projects as assigned
Completes other
duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum qualifications:
High school
diploma or equivalent.
Experience
working in a public service area of a library, or any equivalent combination of
experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities
required to perform the essential job functions.
Preferred Qualifications:
Earned
undergraduate degree from an accredited institution.
Supervisory
experience.
Experience
compiling and managing data.
Familiarity with
academic and/or research library systems: Library of Congress, FOLIO,
interlibrary loan.
Alternately, the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combination of
experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities
required to perform the essential job functions. This includes, but is not
limited to, the following:
Ability to prioritize tasks for self and others, and to adapt to changes in
workflows.
Strong commitment
to customer service.
Organizational
skills.
Basic computer
literacy including the use of e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets.
Ability to
maneuver 35 lb. book carts and move books, including reaching and lifting.
Ability to

multi-task with frequent interruptions.
Duties of this
position will be performed under minimal supervision; therefore, the use of
independent judgment will be necessary for resolving complex problems.
Willingness to
work a nontraditional schedule that is contingent on departmental needs and/or
semester.
Experience compiling and managing data.
Familiarity with
academic and/or research library systems: Library of Congress, FOLIO,
interlibrary loan.
Basic knowledge
of copyright law and “fair use” guidelines applicable to libraries.
