Certified Medical Assistant - COVID-19 Surveillance Testing Project - Temporary (Multiple Positions)

This is a project-based position exclusively focused on administering COVID-19 surveillance tests to the campus community.  Surveillance testing will be required for all students who will be living or attending classes on campus and will also be open to university staff and faculty.  Detailed information about the University’s COVID-19 precautions can be found at

The incumbent will work under the direction of the Nurse Manager of the COVID-19 Surveillance Testing Project. The need for this position is immediate and is expected to continue through May 2021. 


Provides instructions to students, faculty, and staff regarding appointment scheduling, testing locations, and other related questions.

Gives guidance and instruction to members of the university community during appointment check in; provides with testing supplies; answers any questions that arise.

Instructs persons being tested on proper technique for self-swab, or alternatively, performs swab on person being tested for specimen harvesting.

Performs test as per manufacturer’s directions including quality controls, proper handling, step by step development, and results interpretation.

Reviews results of rapid tests and, based on results, provides follow-up instructions as appropriate in accordance with device-related application and manufacturer guidelines.

Reports positive tests to Nurse Manager in collaboration with device-related application results management and patient notification.

Provides instructions to any individual testing positive to immediately consult with DUHS if a student, or if an employee to follow related protocols regarding quarantine/isolation requirements.

Fully complies with all environmental and personal safety protocols, including proper work area disinfection, test handling according to manufacturer guidelines, and proper PPE use.

Works as part of a team of 5 Certified Medical Assistants.

Monitors supplies and identifies need to replenish as needed.

Performs other related duties as assigned.


Minimum qualifications:

Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)

Proven experience with CLIA-waived point-of care laboratory testing experience.

Alternately, the successful candidate will possess any equivalent combination or training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential job functions.  This includes, but is not limited to the following:

Knowledge of best practices for COVID-19 mitigation; ability to quickly become knowledgeable about relevant University procedures and resources.
