The student in this position will help with the project “Taking Humanities to the Hill: University Community Writing Center Storytelling Initiatives,” which is funded by aNational Endowment for the Humanities Spotlight on Humanities grant award.
The student will support specific projects with two community partners, a senior center and a nonprofit organization focused on restorative justice:
1. Macedonia FACE Senior Center: helping seniors from the Hill District develop a community newsletter
2. Elsinore Bennu Think Tank for Restorative Justice: helping members of the think tank, including returning citizens, develop and organize contributions to a book project
In addition to supporting these two community partners, the consultant might work as needed with other community partners (e.g., ACH Clear Pathways, Museum of the Person) or in the on-campus Writing Center. See the Center’s website, www.duq.edu/writing-center, for further description of the Center’s services.Launched in fall 2020, the Community Writing Center (CWC) extends the services of Duquesne’s University Writing Center—individual and small group writing instruction and literacy programming—beyond campus to underserved populations in Pittsburgh, particularly the Hill District. It also supports the development of secondary school writing centers in the greater Pittsburgh region. Building upon the work of the on-campus Writing Center, the CWC seeks to develop the writing skills of community members through assisting with schoolwork, professional applications, résumés, websites, presentations, and other creative endeavors. The CWC’s mission is to improve literacy acquisition and development through creative programming that makes confident and enthusiastic writers.
The position currently pays $16/hour and is funded for 8 hours per week. One hour each week is for professional development.
