Hello Duquesne Mathematics Majors, Applied Mathematics Majors, Data Science Majors, and Biomedical Engineering Majors! The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science seeks to hire one Mathematics tutor for the Spring25 semester with the understanding that they will continue as a tutor for the Fall25/Spring26 academic year at minimum. Mathematics tutors provide support to undergraduate students in introductory, intermediate, and some advanced mathematics courses. You are a potential candidate for the Math tutoring position if:1) You have completed at least two of the following five courses with a letter grade of B+ or higher:Math 215 – Calculus IIIMath 250 – Foundations of Higher MathMath 301 – Introduction to Probability and Statistics IMath 310 – Linear AlgebraMath 314 – Differential Equations2) You have maintained a GPA of 3.5 or higher across all your Mathematics courses.3) You can commit to being a tutor for the Fall25/Spring26 academic year at minimum.4) Upon request, you can provide a reference/referral from Duquesne Mathematics/Statistics faculty members who taught you in at least one Math course.5) You are confident in your understanding of concepts in low and mid-level Math courses, and you are confident that you can explain those concepts to tutees.Although not requirements, attributes such as punctuality, patience, confidence, work ethic, enthusiasm, and creativity are valued. Students who are work-study eligible through the Federal Work-Study program may receive some preference, but we also hire tutors who are not work-study eligible in some circumstances.Hourly Rate: $12 per hourMaximum Tutoring Hours per Week: 15 hoursYou are paid regardless of whether or not a student signs up and receives tutoring during your scheduled tutoring hours.We prefer tutors to provide a minimum of 12 hours per week.You will provide tutoring on the 4th floor of College Hall in our designated Tutoring room along with your fellow math tutors.
Tutoring hours are broken up into 30-minute segments. It’s common for a tutee to seek either a 30 minute or 60 minute tutoring session. You may offer tutoring on M-T-W-TH-F with your earliest start slot 9:00-9:30 am and latest start slot 7:30 pm-8:00 pm.You may offer in-person tutoring only or in-person + online tutoring. If you offer in-person + online tutoring, the tutee will choose their preference. You must still be physically located on the 4th floor of College Hall when conducting online tutoring.Being a Math tutor is a great opportunity.
